Annual Appeal

We have begun our 2016-2017 Annual Fund. Letters were mailed out with a response form to our Alums and Friends, with the goal of doubling last year’s gifts so that we can do our share of the fundraising as part of the Independence Mission Schools network. There are many programs we wish to continue and to initiate here at school, and for these we need your help!  We know we will be able to do this because of your great generosity!  Please consider increasing your gift from last year — 600 children will benefit from your kindness.

If your gift this year would be your first, please  consider making that gift in honor of students like Elvy. It is a chance to change the direction of this generation so they can change the direction of our world.

Please remember, no gift is too small, and you can use our secure online donation form to make a tax-deductible gift today. May God bless you and your families!

elvyElvy’s Story

Elvy DeCoo remembers receiving the news in 6th grade that he was transferring to St. Martin of Tours School. He was ecstatic. The chance to start over was a once in a lifetime opportunity. On his first day of school, he noticed the students treating one another like brothers and sisters not just classmates. His teachers treated him like he was one of their own children. Elvy’s bus ride to school was over 2 hours. He woke up at 4:oo am every morning and didn’t get home until after 6:00 pm. Elvy’s long hours on the bus never bothered him because he got to spend each day at his home away from home, a new family that saved him from a school that left him discouraged and broken.

SMT taught Elvy to dream. He fulfilled the dream of becoming student council president in 8th grade. He fulfilled the dream of playing basketball on a school team. He fulfilled the dream of learning how to play guitar. He fulfilled the dream of making friendships that would last for as long as he lives.

SMT taught Elvy to have faith. The person Elvy was when he transferred in the 6th grade was radically different from the person we watched him become by the time he graduated from 8th grade. He learned to pray. He learned to love. He learned to hope in his future. Elvy became baptized into the Catholic faith during his final year at SMT.

SMT taught Elvy to give. When Elvy found out about the 90th Anniversary Gala last year, he knew he had to attend even though he had just graduated. It was his first chance to give back to his school and celebrate with other alumni even if they were decades older. Elvy realized that the reason he was able to attend SMT was because of the generosity of others so his parents could afford to give him the very best education.
