For the third summer, St. Martin of Tours students and teachers joined Leonardo Helicopters staff (formerly AgustaWestland) for an exciting aviation summer camp offered exclusively to a group of rising eighth graders.
The summer camp consisted of a series of daily sessions focused on Principles of Flight, Helicopters 101, Aircraft Familiarization, Lean Manufacturing and Flight Operations. Included in all practical concepts was an emphasis on teamwork, leadership, and accountability. The students had a chance to tour the facility, and spend time in the training center. The week included a tour of the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester PA. The highlight of the week was having a chance to spend time in the flight simulator, taking over the controls of a AW609. The week ended with a helicopter ride over St. Martin of Tours School.
The incoming eighth grade students were all chosen to participate based on their interest in science and technology. The camp was offered free of charge and included daily transportation, lunch, course materials and a Helicopter ride over St. Martin of Tours School.
The camp, an extension of the partnership between Leonardo and St. Martin’s, has been an innovative way of bringing real-world STEM concepts to life for young adults in the Northeast Philadelphia community.
