St. Martin of Tours School (SMT), an Independent Mission School, held its annual Gala this year at Leonardo’s Helicopter Hangar (formerly AgustaWestland) in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday, April 14th. Leonardo’s has been a long time supporter of SMT through the EITC/OSTC Tax Credit Program and also hosts an Engineering Camp with our students during the summer.
This year’s Gala honorees were Wendell Young, IV (President of UFCW Local 1776), Brother Richard Kestler (SMT Alumnus) and Mary Harkins (Principal of Archbishop Wood HS). Their dedication and commitment to Catholic Education has been a blessing to the City of Philadelphia for years. Senator Christine Tartaglione, an alum from St. Martin’s, was also present to congratulate the honorees for years of service to their communities.
The Gala has raised over $200,000 since its inception three years ago. These funds help offset tuition costs to families who send their children to SMT and as a result, increases enrollment each year so we can serve more children in under-served communities. The event is also an opportunity to network with business leaders, alums and educators to learn how to become involved with the Independence Mission Schools across the City of Philadelphia.
Brother Kestler’s quotes “The mission of all Catholic Educators is simply to touch the hearts of their students so that they might be open to the message and instructions of their Lord. Effective teachers are instruments and Christ is the conductor of a great orchestra.”
